Mission

The Purple Privy Project builds public art that challenges the limits of public space.

We place fully ADA-compliant, purple-wrapped portable restrooms next to gendered facilities in high-traffic areas, creating a space that both shelters and challenges. Every privy is more than a place to go — it’s a work of protest art. The inside of each unit is hand-painted by an LGBTQIA+ artist, transforming these overlooked spaces into intimate, expressive sanctuaries.

This started because public bathrooms are currently a battleground. For trans and intersex folks, a trip to the restroom can mean stress, confrontation, or worse. We’re not waiting around for someone else to fix it.

So we’re making space - loudly, visibly, and with dramatic flair.

Our work sits at the intersection of protest, design, and love. It’s about reclaiming space with intention — and making the basic act of existing in public safer for the people who need it most.

The Purple Privy Project reimagines public space with bold, inclusive installations that prioritize the safety, dignity, and visibility of trans and intersex people — while welcoming all.

While our message centers around trans, non-binary, and intersex inclusion, no one will be turned away from using a Purple Privy. We invite all users to reflect on what it feels like to step into a space that wasn't built with them in mind — a quiet, visceral reminder of the discomfort too many face every day. The experience is intended to provoke empathy, not exclusion.

We’re not here to gatekeep. We’re here to make space — physically, emotionally, and artistically — for everyone willing to share it.
